It seems to me that what those who don't like this spell are displeased with is not the spell itself, but the graphics and maybe the name/description. They are not the same thing

They could have a spell with exactly the same mechanics and completely different graphics.

How about a stream of shiny lil particles? would that seem more "wizardy"? And call it "Arcane Ray" or something.

It seems like a fun spell to use. The eye candy is incidental.|||Sigh, some people rather argue semantics then have an actual discussion.

And yes, it does look like a laser, just because you linked to a blue and thin one means nothing.

That is the source for your picture. It's from a New Zealand computer supply website, and clearly says LED in the description of the item, and the source for the picture.

Again, you're missing the point though, it looks like a laser else they wouldn't have named it "laser beam" now would they? I think its funny how you imply everyone thinking to themselves "Imma chargin mah..." or "Ka Me Ha..." the first time they saw disintigrate to simply be entirely wrong.
